British Light Dragoon Saber (SHF-268)
Horseman's light saber English; period of the American Revolution
This saber carries a 34 3/4 inch blade stamped on both sides "GR" under a crown with the letters "IEFRIS" in two lines. Many Americans officers carried similar swords, either left-over from colonial wars or captured from British officers during the Revolution. This example was owned by Captain Rynear Veghte of Roycefield, Somerset County, NJ., who was born February 19, 1754 and died February 27, 1833, aged 79 years. He served as Lt. and Capt. of the 2nd Battalion, Somerset Co. Militia. He also served as trustee of Queen's College, now Rutgers, resigned in 1810.
